Working from Home: Creating the Perfect Office

Lockdown restrictions seem to be fluctuating depending on your area, and many are choosing to continue to work from home for both safety and convenience. But there’s more to ‘working from home’ than just desk space. We’re going to talk you through some electricals you may or may not have considered adding to your home office, which will make your life more comfortable, and your space more efficient.

Outlets:

No electrician would ever endorse the overuse of extension cables. We’ve seen some shocking (excuse the pun) set ups with plugs piled on top of plugs, which are highly dangerous and inefficient. Installing additional outlets is one of those jobs which feels like it’s going to be more work than it needs to be, but for peace of mind (of both you and I) additional outlets nearer your desk, or sofa if that’s your new workstation, mean you’re not overloading anything. It also saves you investing in

You can also buy timers for your outlets and plugs which mean they turn off automatically at the end of the day. It’s important to maintain a work/life balance, and there are all sorts of intuitive options which are designed to make life easier for you.

The Right Desk Lamp:

There are plenty of things to think about when you’re looking for the right desk lamp, including but not limited to: does it have a wireless charger in the stand? A USB port? Does it focus light in a particular direction? Is it the right height? Is it dimmable? But really the fundamentals are: Does it sit where I need it to sit? Because you don’t want it to take up too much space, or point the light right into your face. A friend recently bought a desk lamp which looks like an old oil lamp. Very pretty, but it shines right in her face – which is not ideal. Do you want to be able to set it up with automated or sensor technology? So that when you’re away from your desk it turns off? Or dims so that you’re not staying up to late? All things to think about, but we recommend you do so that you can choose the right desk lamp for you and your work-style.

Air Conditioning or Heating Apps:

When you’re in the office, corporate are paying for the air con and the heating. There’s someone to complain to when it’s too cold or too hot but at home: it’s just you. There are so many apps and gadgets which can help regulate the heat of your home, but make sure you’re choosing energy efficient ones so that you’re not spending too much maintaining the temperature of your home.

You may also want to invest in some smart-home products which are voice control enabled, for additional convenience.

We hope we’ve given you something to think about, and if there’s anything we can do as electricians to help create the perfect Home Office, give us a call today.
